What general relativity allows
Einstein’s equations relate the geometry of spacetime to the matter and energy in it. They do not forbid space itself from expanding or contracting faster than light, which is why distant galaxies can recede from us faster than light today. Alcubierre used this freedom to write down a geometry in which a bubble of flat space moves at any speed while nothing inside it ever outruns a light beam locally.
Why it is not engineering yet
Three problems stand between the equations and a machine:
- Negative energy. Santiago, Schuster and Visser showed in 2021 that all physically reasonable warp drives violate the null energy condition. They need matter with negative energy density somewhere, and no bulk source of it is known.
- Enormous amounts of it. Quantum inequalities limit how much negative energy can be concentrated. Pfenning and Ford found that this forces the bubble wall to be only a few hundred Planck lengths thick, and the total energy becomes physically unattainable.
- Quantum instability. For bubbles faster than light, calculations by Hiscock (1997) and by Finazzi, Liberati and Barceló (2009) show quantum stress-energy growing without bound at the bubble wall.
Where research stands now
Since 2021, researchers have constructed warp-drive geometries that are slower than light and use only positive energy, most completely by Fuchs and colleagues in 2024. They do not get you to the stars faster than light, but they show that “warp drive” is no longer a synonym for “impossible”. It is an open research field with real, peer-reviewed results and hard unsolved problems.
